Background of the Study
Library management is a key function in educational institutions, ensuring efficient organization, access, and retrieval of academic resources. Traditionally, library management systems have been manual or computer-based, with cataloging, tracking, and issuing of books being managed by library staff. However, as the volume of digital resources and student needs grow, the limitations of traditional systems have become evident. AI-based library management systems, which incorporate automation, machine learning, and predictive algorithms, have the potential to enhance library operations by improving resource management, reducing human error, and providing personalized recommendations to users.
In Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, Nasarawa State, the current library management system, while functional, faces challenges related to efficiency, user satisfaction, and adaptability to the digital age. An AI-based library management system could address these challenges by streamlining administrative tasks, automating book categorization, and enhancing user experience through personalized search results and resource recommendations. This study will compare the traditional and AI-based library management systems at the institution to assess the effectiveness, efficiency, and user experience of the AI-based system.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing reliance on digital resources in libraries, Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa continues to use a traditional library management system that is manual, time-consuming, and inefficient. The limitations of this system hinder the effective utilization of library resources and lead to administrative bottlenecks. AI-based library management systems offer significant advantages in terms of automation, efficiency, and enhanced user engagement. However, their adoption in educational institutions like Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, remains underexplored. This study seeks to evaluate the potential improvements and challenges of implementing AI-based systems in the library environment.
Objectives of the Study
1. To design and implement an AI-based library management system at Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa.
2. To compare the effectiveness of the AI-based system with the traditional library management system.
3. To identify the challenges and opportunities associated with adopting AI-based library management systems.
Research Questions
1. How does the AI-based library management system compare to the traditional system in terms of efficiency and effectiveness?
2. What impact does the AI-based library management system have on user experience and satisfaction?
3. What challenges are associated with the adoption of AI-based library management systems at Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa?
Research Hypotheses
1. The AI-based library management system improves the efficiency of library operations compared to the traditional system.
2. Users of the AI-based library management system report higher satisfaction compared to those using the traditional system.
3. The implementation of the AI-based library management system faces challenges related to user adaptation, system integration, and training.
Significance of the Study
The study will provide valuable insights into the benefits and challenges of adopting AI-based library management systems at Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa. It will help the institution make informed decisions about improving its library services, ultimately enhancing the user experience and operational efficiency.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on a comparative analysis of AI-based and traditional library management systems at Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa. Limitations include possible resistance from staff and users, technical challenges in system implementation, and data privacy concerns.
